Tobacco cessation clinic to start soon at Kalyan Singh Vishisht Cancer Institute- Director, Prof. M.L.B. Bhatt Today, World No Tobacco Day 2025 program was organized at Kalyan Singh Vishisht Cancer Institute with the theme “Exposing the Temptation”. The objective of this program is to raise awareness about cancer caused by tobacco products and to make the society understand that cancer can be prevented with timely and proper treatment. In this program, Professor Madan Lal Brahma Bhatt, Director, Kalyan Singh Vishisht Cancer Institute, Lucknow, emphasized on the harmful effects of tobacco consumption. He said that people who consume pan-masala, betel nut, tobacco, khaini, gutkha etc. should take the risk of cancer seriously. He said that 80% of cancer patients are tobacco consumers, so people should not turn a blind eye to this truth. The tobacco and nicotine industries are working in a dishonest manner to mislead and addict the youth, just for their profits, every day these industries target the new generation and to retain the existing users they create products which are deliberately addictive. Their misleading advertisements and clever strategies are designed to trap the children and youth. We have to protect our young generation from the misleading advertisements and propaganda being run by this industry. He also announced that a Tobacco Cessation Clinic (CCL) will be started soon in the Institute under the supervision of the Department of Public Health and Director, KSSSCI. Dr Pramod Kumar Gupta, Radiation Oncology and Dr AyushLohia, Department of Public Health, organized the event. In his welcome address, Dr AyushLohia said that 1 in every 4 people in India consumes tobacco, with consumption in rural areas being higher than in urban areas. Women who consume tobacco can also suffer from cancer. Dr. AyushLohia also mentioned that 20% of cancer patients are caused by smokeless tobacco consumption, 10% by smoking and 3% by both types of consumption. Even consumption of Paan, Supari and Katha can cause cancer such as oral cancer, gum and palate cancer. Dr. Vijendra Kumar, Oral Medical Superintendent, Dr. Varun Vijay, Medical Superintendent, Mr. Rajni Kant Verma, Finance Officer and other faculty members were present in today's program.
