On the occasion of World Head and Neck Cancer Day, an awareness programme was organised today at Kalyan Singh Advanced Super Speciality Cancer Institute, Lucknow. The objective of the programme was to create awareness among the public about head and neck cancer, emphasise the importance of early detection, and educate people about preventive measures against the disease.
Dr. Pramod Kumar Gupta, Additional Professor, Department of Radiation Oncology, and Dean, highlighted the role of chemotherapy and radiotherapy in the management of head and neck cancers. He stated that with modern radiotherapy techniques, effective and safe treatment of cancer is now possible, leading to improved treatment outcomes and quality of life for patients.
Addressing the gathering, the Director of the Institute, Prof. M.L.B. Bhatt, said that the majority of head and neck cancers are associated with tobacco consumption and smoking. He emphasised that these cancers can be prevented to a great extent through awareness, a healthy lifestyle, and timely screening. He urged all citizens to undergo regular cancer screening and to seek medical attention promptly if they notice any early warning signs of cancer.
Dr. Priyank, Senior Resident, Department of Surgical Oncology, provided information on the latest surgical approaches for the treatment of head and neck cancers. At the end of the programme, Dr. Rumita Singh, Assistant Professor, Department of Radiation Oncology, addressed the queries of patients' attendants through an interactive question-and-answer session.
The programme was attended by Prof. Vijendra Kumar, Chief Medical Superintendent; Dr. Varun Vijay, Medical Superintendent; Prof. Sharad Singh, Head, Department of Radiation Oncology; Dr. Ankur Verma, Head, Department of Surgical Oncology; along with other faculty members of the Institute, nursing officers, and patients' attendants.
